Tarpana – to nourish

• It is a unique procedure of application of the Sneha ( Tail/Ghee) to the eyes.
• This procedure is useful both in healthy as well as diseased persons.

In healthy persons, akshitarpan is carried out to protect the eye from degeneration due to the aging process & to improve eyesight.

In diseased persons, akshitarpan is used for various diseases of the eye.

Procedure

• Making a frame of black gram paste around the eyes, followed by pouring the medicated ghee upon the eyes.
• The eye is made to open & close alternatively several times & then the ghee is removed to complete the procedure.

Benefits & Indication

Akshitarpan is useful in decreasing the number of eyes and following conditions –

• Dryness of the eyes
• Stiffness of the eyes
• Darkness in front of the eyes
• Injury to the eyes
• Falling of the eyelashes
• The blurring of the vision
• Difficulty in opening and closing eyes
• Conjunctivitis
• Watering of the eyes
• Painful & Swollen eyes
