According to Acharya Charak
Reference - Sutrasthana 21 Astaunindaniya adhyaya
Vitiated dosha: Vata
Dushya: Jatharagni(digestive fire) - becomes sharp
Therefore, the person digests food quickly and craves it excessively; over time, he suffers from severe diseases.

The obese person suffers from eight defects:

  • Ayushi hrasa (reduce lifespan)
  • Javoparodh (slow movement)
  • Kruchh adhyavaayta (difficulty in sexual intercourse)
  • Daurbalya (weakness)
  • Daurgandhya (foul body odour)
  • Svedabadh (excessive sweating)
  • Kshudha atimatra (excessive hunger)
  • Pipasa atiyog (excessive thirst)

Causes of sthaulaya:

  • Over eating
  • Consuming heavy, sweet, cold and unctuous food
  • Lack of exercise
  • Daytime sleep
  • Lack of mental work and Hereditary factors.

According to Acharya Sushruta:

  • Reference- Sutrasthana 15 Dosha-dhatu-mala kshay vriddhi vignaniya 

Vitiated dosha: Kapha
Dushya: Meda dhatu

Obese person is quickly afflicted with shortness of breath, thirst, hunger, excessive sleep, sweating, and
exhaustion Due to the tenderness of fat, he is incapable of all activities and the paths are blocked by Kapha and Medas (fat). Due to the blocked channels, other Dhatus are not nourished well, hence the obese person has low vitality.

According to Vagbhatta:

  • Reference- Sutrasthana 14 Dwividho upkramaniya adhyaya 

Consuming over-nourishing (Santarpana) substances beyond what is required leads to obesity (excessive stoutness) and related disorders.

Vagbhatta mentioned sthaulaya is a santarpanjanya vyadhi and classified into 3 categories:

  • Adhika sthaulaya (severe/advanced obesity)
  • Madhya sthaulaya (moderate obesity)
  • Heena sthaulaya (mild obesity)
