It is the seat of Agni(digestive fire). It is located above the umbilicus and is supported and nourished by
the strength of the fire. Grahani is so called because it receives (grasps) the food.
Function: It holds the undigested food and releases it after digestion.
When the grahani is vitiated, it releases the food in an undigested state (Ama).

Involved vitiated dosha: Vata, Pitta, Kapha (all three dosha together)

Nidana (causes):
Anshan- fasting
Atibhojana- overeating
Ati Adhvagaman- excessive walking
Bhukta matrasya cha swapna- sleeping immediately after eating
Vega nigraha- suppression of urges.

Lakshana (symptoms):
One passes stool..
द्रवं शुष्कं- sometimes liquid, sometimes dry
सा म- undigested
शब्दफेनवत्-त् with sound and froth
पुनः पुनः सृजेद्वर्चः - repeatedly stool passes.
का र्श्य - emaciation
दौ र्बल्यं- weakness

Chikitsa (treatment):
ली नं पक्वा शयस्थं वा ऽऽप्या मं स्रा व्यं सदी पनैः ।
शरी रा नुगते सा मे रसे लङ्घनपा चनम्।म्।
If the Ama is stuck or located in the Pakvashaya (colon), it should be eliminated by using digestive drugs.
If the Ama-Rasa has spread throughout the body, fasting and digestive measures are needed.

Panchakarma in grahani:
1. Niruha basti
If feces, urine and flatus are obstructed, Niruha basti(decoctional enema) should be given after
performing oleation for two or three days followed by massage and sweating.

2. Virechan:
Once the Vata is subsided, the displaced doshas should be purged using castor oil or Tilvaka-ghee
mixed with kshara.
3. Anuvasan basti:
In a person whose viscera are dry and stool is bound, an Oil enema (Anuvasana basti) should be given
in proper dose, using oil prepared with digestive, sour and vata-pacifying drugs.

Diet and lifestyle:
Diet: cow's ghee, triphala, lemon-ginger juice, pomegranate and buttermilk.
Avoid raw and cold food, heavy dairy products.
Lifestyle: Eat meals only when the previous meal is fully digested, maintain eating and sleeping time,
practice yoga and asanas like suryanamaskar.
Avoid day sleep, overeating and heavy meal.
