In Ayurveda, tinnitus is known as Karnanada, a condition where a person hears ringing, buzzing, or hissing sounds without any external source.

Ayurvedic Perspective on Karnanada

  • Dosha Imbalance: Tinnitus is primarily considered a Vata dosha disorder. Vata governs movement, space, and the nervous system. When Vata becomes aggravated (Vata Prakopa) due to stress, aging, or improper diet, it enters the channels of the head and ears (Shrotas), causing abnormal sound perceptions.
  • Related Conditions: Ayurvedic texts (under Shalakya Tantra, the branch focusing on ear, nose, and throat diseases) distinguish similar ear ailments:
    • Karnanada: Perception of sound like a ringing or buzzing.
    • Karnakshweda: Hearing a sound similar to the noise of a flute or rushing wind, often linked to fatigue or diminished nerve strength.

Causes in Ayurveda

  • Excessive physical exertion, emaciation, or chronic fatigue (Kshaya).
  • Suppressing natural urges (such as sneezing or coughing).
  • Frequent exposure to loud or high-frequency sounds, and traveling in cold, windy weather.
  • Mental stress, anxiety, and irregular sleeping patterns that aggravate Vata.

Ayurvedic Management and Therapies

Treatment focuses on pacifying the aggravated Vata dosha and nourishing the nervous system through specialized procedures (Panchakarma and external therapies):

  • Karnapoorna: Instilling warm, medicated herbal oils or medicated ghee into the ear canal to lubricate and calm local Vata.
  • Nasya: Administering herbal drops through the nostrils to clear and treat head and neck channels.\
  • Shirovasti / Shirodhara: Retaining warm herbal oils on the head or pouring a continuous stream of oil/decoction to calm the mind and nervous system.
  • Herbal Remedies: Use of calming and Vata-pacifying herbs and warm spices like ginger, cinnamon, and turmeric under expert guidance.

Lifestyle and Dietary Recommendations

  • Diet: Eat warm, freshly cooked, grounding meals at regular times. Avoid dry, cold, or processed foods that increase Vata.
  • Routine: Maintain a consistent sleep schedule, going to bed early (ideally before 10 PM).
