Adenomyosis is a condition where the tissue that normally lines the uterus (the endometrium) grows into the muscular walls of the uterus. This misplaced tissue continues to thicken and bleed during menstrual cycles, causing the uterus to enlarge—often significantly—and leading to severe pelvic pain and heavy, prolonged periods.

Common Symptoms

  • Severe menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea) that may worsen over time.
  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), often with blood clots.
  • Chronic pelvic pain or bloating.
  • Pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia).

Diagnosis

  • Pelvic Ultrasound: A primary imaging tool to visualize the uterine walls.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Provides highly detailed images of the uterus, making it very effective for diagnosing adenomyosis.

In ayurveda adenomyosis is compared with vataj asrigdara.

Ayurveda manages adenomyosis by addressing symptom-based imbalances (like Vataj Asrigdara) through hormonal regulation and pelvic anti-inflammatory therapies.

focus on deep uterine detoxification (Panchakarma) and herbal formulas designed to stop excessive bleeding, reduce pain, and shrink the thickened uterine wall.

Local Therapies:

  • Uttar Basti (intra-uterine or vaginal administration of medicated oils/decoctions) is highly utilized to target the uterus directly.
  • Pichu (tampon soaked in herbal oil) is used to soothe local pain and inflammation.
  • Diet and Lifestyle: A focus on reducing stress, maintaining healthy digestion, and daily yoga or pranayama (breathing exercises) to support hormonal balance.
