Nasya (Nasal Therapy in ayurveda)
- Part of Panchakarma, where medicated oil, ghee, juice, or powder is administered through the nose.
- Contraindications & Adverse Effects Based on Ayurvedic Principles
- A Panchakarma procedure for eliminating doshas from the head
- Indicated in various Urdhwajatrugata (above clavicle) disorders
- Must be performed only in suitable patients
- Improper use → serious complications
Patients unsuitable for Nasya include:
1.Given in indigestion / after meals →
- Cough, Dyspnea, Vomiting, Coryza
2. After fatty food / desire for wine or water →Mouth & nasal discharge,Eye stickiness, cataract,Head diseases
3. After head-bath → Coryza
4 Hungry person → Vata aggravation
5. Thirsty person → Dry mouth, more thirst
6. In fatigue, intoxication, fainting →
- Same adverse effects as in Asthapana Basti
7. Injured with weapon/stick → Severe pain
8. After sexual intercourse, exercise, alcohol → Pain in head, eyes, chest & shoulders
9. Acute fever & grief → Cataract, increased fever
10. After purgation → Vata aggravation, sense organ damage
11. After Anuvasana Basti → Kapha aggravation, heaviness, itching, parasites
12. Pregnant woman → Growth restriction, congenital defects (blindness, deformities, hemiplegia)
13. Unsuitable season / Cloudy day →
- Cold-related disorders,Putrefied rhinitis,Head diseases.
Conclusion :–
- Nasya is highly beneficial when used properly
- Wrong administration = Aggravation of Doshas + serious complications.
- Must avoid in contraindicated conditions
- Hence, proper patient selection is the key to safe Panchakarma practice.
