Definition:

Badhirya is a disease of Shrotrendriya (organ of hearing) characterized by partial or complete loss of hearing, caused by vitiation of Vata dosha alone or in association with Kapha dosha, which leads to obstruction of Shabdavaha srotas (auditory channels) and impairment of sound perception.

Causes:

  • Vata–Kapha dushti
  • Excess intake of Ruksha, Sheeta, Tikta, Katu ahara
  • Exposure to loud sound
  • Trauma to head or ear
  • Chronic Pratishyaya and Jwara

Symptoms:

  • Diminished hearing
  • Complete loss of hearing
  • Difficulty in speech perception
  • Sensation of ear blockage
  • Giddiness (Bhrama)

Treatment:

  • Vata shamana chikitsa
  • Kapha avarana hara chikitsa
  • Nasya (Anu taila, Ksheerabala taila)
  • Karnapurana (medicated oil instillation)
  • Shiropichu
