Anuvasan Basti Ayogya
(Contra-Indications & Adverse Effects of Anuvasana Basti )
Basti: One of the main Panchakarma therapies.
Anuvasana Basti: Oil-based enema, indicated mainly for Vata disorders.
Proper indication is essential — otherwise it may aggravate disease.
General Contra-indication Rule
"Yathā sthāpanam, tathā anuvasanam"
Those unfit for Niruha/Āsthāpana Basti are also unfit for Anuvasana Basti.
Adverse Effects in Contra-indicated Conditions
1. Empty stomach → Basti moves upward (Urdhvaga).
2. Jwara, Pandu, Kāmalā, Prameha → Excites Dosha → leads to Udara roga (ascites, abdominal disorders).
3. Arśa (piles) → Obstruction → Adhmana (distension).
4. Arochaka (anorexia) → Worsens loss of appetite.
5. Mandāgni / Durbala → Digestion weakens further.
6. Pratiśyaya, Plīhodara, etc. → Exacerbates already aggravated Doshas.
Hence, strict avoidance is advised.
Conclusion :–
- Anuvasana Basti is highly beneficial in Vata disorders, but only when properly indicated.
- Wrong administration = Aggravation of Doshas + serious complications.
- Hence, proper patient selection is the key to safe Panchakarma practice.
