Basti: One of the main Panchakarma therapies.

Anuvasana Basti: Oil-based enema, indicated mainly for Vata disorders.

Proper indication is essential — otherwise it may aggravate disease.

General Contra-indication Rule

"Yathā sthāpanam, tathā anuvasanam"

Those unfit for Niruha/Āsthāpana Basti are also unfit for Anuvasana Basti.

Adverse Effects in Contra-indicated Conditions

1. Empty stomach → Basti moves upward (Urdhvaga).

2. Jwara, Pandu, Kāmalā, Prameha → Excites Dosha → leads to Udara roga (ascites, abdominal disorders).

3. Arśa (piles) → Obstruction → Adhmana (distension).

4. Arochaka (anorexia) → Worsens loss of appetite.

5. Mandāgni / Durbala → Digestion weakens further.

6. Pratiśyaya, Plīhodara, etc. → Exacerbates already aggravated Doshas.

Hence, strict avoidance is advised.
