In ayurveda, it is known as abhishyanda which is characterized by excessive watery or mucous discharge from the eyes and the root cause of almost all the eye diseases. It is a contagious disease that spreads from one person to other and if neglected leads to other complicated eye diseases.
Causes(Nidanas) of abhishyanda:
1. Nija (internal cause) - Due to vitiation of doshas.
2. Agantuja (external cause) - Exposure to dust, smoke, wind and allergens, physical trauma, direct contact with an infected person.
Symptoms of abhishyanda according to doshas:
1. Vataja- pricking pain, stiffness, foreign body sensation ,headache.
2. Pittaja: burning sensation, excessive hot lacrimation.
3. Kaphaja: white,cold,sticky discharge, itching and heaviness in the eyes.
4. Raktaja: reddish eye colour, coppery red colour of tears.
Treatment of abhishyanda:
Treat the cause first.
Depending on the doshas, panchakarma and kriyakalpas are performed:
1. Sira vyadha: immediate relief through bloodletting procedure in lalata sira on the forehead or apanga sira near the outer corner of eye.
2. Nasya: nasal administration of medicated oil which soothes burning and pain, reduces edema and swelling, alleviates eye secretions.
3. Tarpana: reduce dryness and redness through retaining warm, medicated ghee over the eyes.
4. Anjana: highly effective for treating conjunctivitis by applying medicated collyrium or paste to the inner lower eyelids.
Diet and lifestyle:
- Intake of cow’s ghee, amla powder, include leafy greens and avoid sour, salty, spicy and oily food.
- Maintain eye hygiene, environmental protection through sunglasses, avoid eye strain and rubbing, avoid screen timing for long duration, rest your eyes.
