It is also known as hordeolum. In Ayurveda, it is called as anjananamika which is a painful, red and swollen lump arise over the eyelid. It is an acute and localized bacterial infection of the oil glands in the eyelid.

Ayurvedic perspective on stye

  • Dosha imbalance: stye is a result of aggravated pitta dosha and vitiation of the rakta dhatu (blood tissue).  
  • Causes: due to intake of spicy, sour or hot foods, poor hygiene and dust exposure.
  • Symptoms: coppery colored or red bump on the edge of eyelid, burning and pricking sensation, pain with tenderness, photophobia.

Ayurvedic management and therapies

1. Parisheka: continous pouring of a lukewarm herbal decoction over the closed eye.

2. Aschyotana: instilling warm, sterile liquid drops directly into the open conjuactival sac.

3. Pindi: application of a thick, medicated herbal paste wrapped inside a clean sterile cloth and placed directly over the closed eye.

4. Anjana: applying a paste of medicine to the inner lining of the lower eyelid margin which entirely scrape away lingering deep tissue toxins and helping in wound healing.

Lifestyle and dietary recommendations:

  • Diet: cooling grains like old rice, yava. Intake of bitter and sweet vegetables.
  • Routine: maintain the eyelid hygiene, dust protection through glasses.
